It was a warm morning, and Mistpelt was in the mood for an adventure. She had been so bored cooped up in the camp for the past few days and she really wanted something exciting to happen. She decided to head down to the gorge and see if there was anything interesting there. Usually cats didn't go there because of their fear of falling, but today Mistpelt was too reckless to care.
She made her way to the gorge and looked down into it. It was a big drop. A scaryily high drop. As she stared down, she could picture a cat tripping and falling all the way down...down...down... and then hitting the bottom, dying instantly. She shivered but then grinned. I wonder what it's like down there... she wondered. I'm going to find out!
She walked along the edge until she found what she thought was a good way to get down. She carefully edged her way down the wall a bit and then leaped onto a rock jutting out from the side of the cliff. She leaped down onto another one, and then another one, until she was almost at the bottom. When she thought she was just about down, she leapt off of the cliff wall and onto the stony sandy ground below. The floor was burning, so it made it hard to stand in one place for too long. In the middle of the gorge, there were grNoy patches and a small stream, so she headed over for a look. She drank quickly and looked up again, startled to see a pile of bones gathering near where she had leaped down. She walked towards them and gasped in horror when she saw that they were cat bones. Half the flesh was still covering it and she could just make out a tabby pelt. Mites and maggots and whatever else were chewing away at the flesh, slowly eating it away. Mistpelt hurried away back to the stream and lay down as far as she could from the carcas. A wave of nausea swept over her and she thought she was going to be sick.
I'm going back to camp! she decided and started looking for a way up. She was halfway up clinging to a rock, when she heard a loud roaring noise. She looked around loudly for the source of it, and was horrified to see a tidal wave of water rushing down the gorge. No! All the snow must be melting from the mountains! she thought panicked. She started climbing faster, but then realized she couldn't make it. Just as she was climbing onto another rock, the wave caught her and she was dragged into the water. She was spun around under water until she crashed into something hard. It was a rock. She pulled herself up and clung to the rock that was jutting out of the water. She wasn't going to last on that rock for long, because the water was slowly rising as more and more poured in.
"Help!" she screamed. "Someone, help me!"
